SQUASH - QUESTION & ANSWER

Squash
Squash
QUESTION:  Hi - I'm in Charleston, SC and a little new to gardening.  I ordered the "squash small wonder" seeds and have several of these plants growing.  The strangest thing (I think) is that instead of being yellow (the squash fruit itself, I mean) they started out a pale mint green and then got a mottled dark green pattern on them.  Will they turn yellow eventually or is something wrong with them?  They look healthy, but definitely the wrong color!  I thought I'd mixed up my seeds, but I planted more to make sure, and the same thing is happening.  Thanks!

ANSWER:  Your Small Wonder squash is lumped in with the winter squash, which means it will most likely go through this green phase.  It should turn orange after the greening period (Pumpkins do much the same.)  Email again if they do not ripen as they should, but I think they are fine. It shouldn't be long before you have a succulent crop of squash!
