 Poinsettia QUESTION
I got a poinsettia for Christmas and would like to plant it out side. What would I have to do to make is bloom next year? I live in zone 9. ANSWER The poinsettia is only root hardy in your zone 9 area, meaning it will die back to the ground and regrow from the roots. It will come back from the roots, but you might not get flowers, since it blooms best in late fall, winter, and spring. If you want to try it outdoors, plant it in full sun, it won't blossom or develop those large colorful bracts in shade. The planting area should be fairly rich and humousy (dig in compost and leaf mold), and should be well-drained. The plant should be kept well-watered. It does not like to completely dry out but does not want wet roots. Fertilize it with fish emulsion in late summer. Coach Anne
