Ask Coach - Agapanthus Bulbs

AgapanthusQUESTION: I have several agapanthus bulbs which I started from seed in 2001.  They have yet to bloom, and I would like to know if there is something special I need to do in order for them to bloom.  I keep them in pots outdoors in the summer (sunny spot) and take them in for the winter.  I have tried repotting them and separating them.  What do you suggest.  I would think they should have started to bloom after 6 years.

ANSWER First of all, congratulations on your successful seed starting!  You also have the best criterian for a gardener - patience.

Usually, when agapanthus fails to bloom it's because it has too much room in the pot or garden.  The bulbs do best in a pot because you can control how crowded they become.  They love to be pot bound and will blossom when they seem to have no room to grow.  Try shoving as many as you can into a pot.  Also, give them a dose of a liquid fertilizer that has a high middle number.  These fertilizers are often called "Bloom Boosters."  Good Luck.
