WHITEFLY

QUESTION: A cloud of tiny white insects flies up from my gardenia whenever I brush the leaves. Will they harm it? How can I control them?

ANSWER: You have a whitefly infestation. Gardenias are very susceptible to this pest. Insect sprays are ineffective against whitefly, since it flies the minute there is any disturbance to the plant. Look for a systemic pesticide labeled for whitefly control and follow label directions.
