Japanese Beetles

To prevent having Japanese Beetles in your Roses, plant four o'clocks near them.  The four o'clock is a natural enemy of the beetle.  I had over 100 rose bushes at my home in Raleigh, NC and rarely had more than 10 beetles a summer.  The four o'clocks come in all colors (I loved the purple the best) and give a beautiful color to the garden in the evening. This sure beats spraying insecticides every week or so.

Rose Bed Preparation

In the fall, pile well rotted cow manure where roses are to be planted in the spring. Let it lie all winter and in the spring, dig a 3ft. wide and 3ft. deep hole, working the manure well into the backfill soil. Follow planting instructions. Each spring, top dress with well rotted cow manure and mulch.

Composted Cow Manure

My best gardening tip is to use plenty of composted cow manure when planting new plants or winterizing roses. Never use fresh manure, it burns plants.
